Patil also suggested to the Railways that they replace the steel rods at the entrance of bogies with rubber installations so that hands of commuters do not slip and they do not fall off the train.The court also suggested that state government change its office hours and even working days to avoid overcrowding on the trains.

The bench also suggested that the timings of school and colleges should also be changed so as to avoid peak hour rush. It could be initially taken up on a trial basis. The bench also told the Railways that every station must have a list of nearby hospitals so that in cases of emergency, accident victims can be taken straight there in ambulances.The court made this suggestion while hearing a suo motu (on its own) PIL which was converted out of a letter written by A.B. Thakker requesting the court for reservation of a separate compartment for senior citizens in local trains.While hearing this petition earlier the judges had asked the railway authorities to consider providing a dedicated coach for senior citizens to ensure easy and safe access for them. The court had also asked the Railways to conduct a trial run on the concept.

The bench had also asked Railways to ensure that 14 dedicated seats are made available to senior citizens in all suburban trains. To which the Railways said it had put up indications on doors of coaches and inside coaches to show that certain seats had been reserved for senior citizens. While the court was of the view that if there is a dedicated compartment for senior citizens in trains operating at a particular timing, senior citizens would rather wait for that train rather than get on to a crowded train. In the past also the court had suggested the government to consider changing work timings and weekly offs of people so that passengers in trains are divided and there are lesser crowds in local trains.The other suggestion to decongest the local trains by the court was to run double decker trains. However the railway authorities had informed the court that it was not possible for them to introduce double-decker trains given the current infrastructure.
